Workshop on G.C. E. (A/L) Combined Mathematics for Northern Provincial Combined Mathematics Teachers
The Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka wanted to conduct a capacity development programme for Island wide G. C. E. (A/L) Combined Mathematics teachers. In this regard the Ministry invited the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Jaffna to conduct a workshop/ short programme for G. C. E (A/L) Combined Mathematics teachers of Northern Province in collaboration with Northern Provincial Department of Education.
Dr. R. Prasanthan, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Mrs. A. C. Volantine, AD Mathematics, Provincial Department of Education were entrusted to coordinate this training programme.
This programme was conducted in two groups with each group consisting about 50 teachers. Training programme for both groups was conducted simultaneously during two weekends 23-24 November 2019 and 30 November-01 December 2019. The sessions were conducted in the Lecture Halls of the Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Botany Departments. In these full day sessions, teachers were provided with handouts which were prepared by the respective recourse personals. The Provincial Department took care of printing of handouts, lunch, refreshments and other necessary expenses.
Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Mr. S. Selvarajan, Dr. S. Arivalazahan, Mr. A. Laheetharan, Dr. R. Prasanthan, Dr. T. Mathanarajan, and Mr. M. Kokulan of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics served as resource personals in this workshop. Dr. T. Sritharan of the School of Computing, University of Colombo also served as a resource personal as well. During that period, he was attached to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a visiting Lecturer. Further, the non-academic staff of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics also extended their services during the workshop.
The event was successfully conducted and the Teachers expressed their high satisfaction with the areas covered in the workshop and the standard of the handouts provided. Further, the provincial department of Education was very pleased with the support provided by the Department of Mathematics and Statists and by the University Administration.
