Professor Balan Selliah Memorial Bursary

The late Balan Selliah received his PhD in Statistics from Stanford University, USA, and then joined University of Toronto, Canada, as a faculty member in 1964. His heart was in Jaffna while his physical body was in Toronto back in the 60’s. So, he finally decided to return to Jaffna and joined at Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai to serve his people. He absorbed into Jaffna Campus as an academic staff in 1974 when it was estabilised at the undergraduate section attached to Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai. He served as a Head, Department of Mathematics and Statistics when the late Professor P. Kanagasabapathy as Dean, Faculty of Science. The curriculum of Mathematics and Statistics was first developed during the founding years of 1974 and 1975 by the first Head of Department, the late Professor P. Kanagasabapathy and the first Professor of Statistics Balan Selliah (late), in line with the curriculum of other universities in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
A community of past students, former colleagues, and well-wishers of late Professor Balan Selliah hereby establish a memorial scholarship bursary to honor the late Professor for his service as an educator.  A Community of beloved students of Professor  Balan Selliah decided to give bursary in the name of the Professor as a mark of respect to clever needy student(s) studying Statistics as a main subject.
